Gardening Made Easy #4

In this article, we will be understanding how to provide adequate lighting in order to let our plants thrive. About 4 years ago, when I was buying my first plant, I was told that the spider plant is an ‘indoor’ plant. So I kept it in a place with no sunlight.

And surprise surprise, it didn’t make it for very long. Then I started doing my research on why my plant didn’t survive. I found out that no plant is essentially an ‘indoor’ plant. Every plant needs some amount of sunlight.

For plants like peace lily, snake plant and zz plant even low light conditions are a fit. At the same time plants like Alocasia, fiddle leaf fig require bright light; here bright light means that the rising or setting rays of the sun fall on the leaf.

Plants like hibiscus, bougainvillea require direct sunlight. If some plants are kept in spaces with no light then I would recommend to put them in a place where they can get adequate lighting at least once a week. It is necessary to understand the needs of the plant in order for it to thrive.

There are some signals that the plants give out if appropriate lighting conditions are not met. For example, their leaves become droopy and change their colour from

green to yellow and in cases of extremely poor lighting their leaves even turn pale white. The size of the leaf also gets smaller because the lack of light results in insufficient energy which forbids the leaves to grow into their proper size.

Improper lighting also results in the plants getting leggy which means that the stem gets elongated, almost appearing to reach out for light. So inadequate lighting not only hinders the overall growth of the plant but also destroys the aesthetic of a plant.

Remember, that it is possible for plants to get too much light also which would result in burnt tips or holes in leaves. It can be a little tricky to get the lighting conditions right as a beginner so remember to always to your fair share of research and see if you can accommodate the needs of that plant and only then bring it to your home.

Having an amazing gardening journey!
